The World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL 2023) was a significant event hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in Beijing, China. Spanning from September 19th to 20th, this conference brought together approximately 700 delegates from both China and abroad. These delegates represented 13 international organizations and 29 national S&T institutions, highlighting the global importance of the discussions that took place.

With the overarching theme of “Improving Science Literacy and Building a Prosperous World—Join Hands on the Path Towards Modernization,” WCSL 2023 emphasized the critical role of science popularization and public science literacy in propelling societal advancement. The participants, ranging from heads of international organizations to distinguished scientists, scholars, policymakers, and experienced science communicators, engaged in fruitful discussions on strategies to enhance public engagement with science.

One notable attendee was Mr. Abdul Rauf, the CEO and founder of the Pakistan Science Club. His presence added a valuable perspective to the discussions, drawing insights from the experiences and initiatives of the Pakistan Science Club. This contribution enriched the discourse on science popularization and public science literacy, further emphasizing the global nature of these challenges.

On the first day, the campers dived into the captivating world of electrical energy. The young scientists had the opportunity to create their very own “Volta man” and explore electrical circuits, controls, and the principles of electric currents. The magic of electromagnetism unfolded before their eyes through interactive sessions and engaging experiments. They also delved into the significance of renewable energy sources for a sustainable future.

The excitement did not stop there; the participants also embarked on a journey into the history of automata, mechanical devices designed to mimic living beings. Inspired by various types of automata, the students got hands-on in creating their own small, creative, and intricate machines. They discovered the crossroads between art and engineering, opening their minds to endless possibilities.

The second day of the camp introduced the principles of robotics to our eager learners. Under the guidance of experts, they took on the challenge of designing and assembling their wired robots. This hands-on experience not only enriched their knowledge of robotics but also fostered essential skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.

The day culminated with the thrilling “Robo-Rumble: Battle of the Bots,” where the robots clashed in friendly battles. Witnessing the campers’ creativity, innovation, and competitive spirit was a treat for everyone involved. The Robo-Rumble was a day of camaraderie, bringing together budding scientists and engineers in an atmosphere of excitement and exploration.

The final day of the Abbottabad Hands-on Science Camp 2023 concluded with a heartwarming certificate distribution ceremony. Each participant was recognized for their active engagement and dedication throughout the camp. These certificates will serve as a reminder of their valuable learning experience and inspire them to continue their journey in the realm of science and technology.

Pakistan Science Club designed this monthly maker challenge which is free of cost anyone from ages 10 to 16 can participate in this challenge. Each month, we will present a new challenge to the PSC community to try out. These challenges encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through hands-on projects related to science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Why Maker Challenge?

Pakistan Science Club wanted to develop healthy activities for children through this maker’s challenge we will be able to encourage children to dive into the world of invention and boost their creativity. Some of the outcomes of this challenge will be,

  • Help in boosting creativity and critical thinking.
  • Enhance their skills and a better understanding of different scientific phenomena.
  • Through these makers’ challenges, participants will get recognition and connect with the science-loving community.
  • Through these challenges, participants will know the problems and find a way to solve these problems.
  • In the future, this community will create positive and valuable contributions to the world.

How?

Firstly, participants are required to register themselves on the Paksc website by filling out the registration form. Upon successful registration, they will receive a confirmation via WhatsApp or email. Subsequently, Team PSC will add them to the Maker Challenge WhatsApp group, where they will receive all updates and relevant information.

The Maker Challenge will be announced on the 10th of each month. We will present a specific problem and issue a challenge to the participants along with an idea of how to approach and solve the problem through a video. Participants are expected to come up with their own solutions and ideas, and they are allowed to take inspiration from our video or other sources.

Day 1: Journey into Joules: Exploring Electricity

The camp commenced with an exciting theme – “Journey into Joules: Exploring Electricity.” On this day, participants delved into the captivating world of electrical energy. Over the years. Team PSC has facilitated the participation of more than 5000 young scientists in onsite summer camps. In response to the covid-19 pandemic, we successfully executed nine online science camps over the last three years and organized an extremely successful one-week on-site camp at the National Skills University Islamabad with the collaboration of the ECO Science Foundation. 

This year we have decided to expand our summer camps to three major cities: Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. Our camp program aims to nurture the spirit of curiosity and exploration in young individuals, providing them with an immersive learning experience in the fields of electricity, machines, and robotics. 

During the five-day camp, students will have the opportunity to build circuits, understand the principle behind wire remote controllers, delve into the making of automata and create their own walking automata, design and assemble wired robots, participate in exciting robo fights, and engage in a surprise STEAM challenge for families. The program is designed to enhance students’ understanding of STEAM concepts, foster creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork, and instill an appreciation for the art and innovation in these fields.
