Learn optics, reflection, and refraction in a fun hands-on way.
A telescope is an optical instrument that makes distant objects appear closer using lenses or mirrors. This DIY telescope experiment allows you to build your own working telescope and explore basic astronomy concepts.
The first telescope was invented in 1608 in the Netherlands by Hans Lippershey. Today, you can build a simple version at home and understand how it works.

Required materials for DIY telescope
🛠 Required Tools
- Scissors
- Paper cutter
- Tape
🔰 Step 1: Prepare Lens Holder
Mark a circle on cardboard using the lens as a guide.

Marking circle for lens holder
Cut the circle carefully.

Cutting lens holder
Now draw another circle using a PVC pipe in the center.

Marking center for pipe
Cut to form a doughnut shape. Make two such pieces.

⚙️ Step 2: Prepare Telescope Body
Take a black chart sheet (25cm × 60cm).

🔭 Step 3: Roll the Telescope Tube
Place the lens and roll the chart sheet around it.

🔬 How This DIY Telescope Works
This telescope works on the principle of refraction. Light enters through the objective lens and forms an image. The eyepiece magnifies this image, allowing you to see distant objects clearly.
