Automatic Water Feeder for Birds is an interesting environment-friendly activity to provide small birds water during hot summer days. A hands-on skill-building project using ordinary household material to understand the concept of gravity, atmospheric pressure and its applications.
What is Bird water Feeder?
It is an exciting hands-on activity to understand atmospheric pressure and one of its basic application for helping little birds under scorching sun.
How does it work?
Because of gravity, the water in the reservoir wants to flow out through the small opening in the “bowl” area but cannot because the pull of the water creates a low-pressure zone in the top of the bottle that counteracts it (it’s like anti-gravity!) by “sucking” the water up. This suction cannot be relieved so long as the water in the bowl remains higher than the opening in the bottle.
What material and tools do we need?
- 2 plastic bottles (1.5 l)
- 4 pencils
- Glue gun
- Safety goggles
- Soldering iron (optional)
What is the purpose of the activity?
The activity focuses on basic principles of force balancing, atmospheric pressure and their applications in everyday life.
