## Session #1 Length: Foundation Stage Essential skills

Length Foundation Stage: Essential skills Pakistan Science club

## session #1 Length

Introduction:

Length is the distance from one end to the other end of an object. In geometric measurements, length is the most extended dimension of an object. In the International System of Quantities, length is any quantity with dimension distance. In other contexts, length is a measured dimension of an object. Wikipedia

Units of length: meter (m)

### Hands-on Project # 1

A ruler, sometimes called a rule or line gauge, is a device used in geometry and technical drawing, as well as the engineering and construction industries, to measure or draw straight lines

Materials Required:

1. 3mm hardboard sheet/ card board sheet
2. Black marker
3. 1 feet ruler
4. Hacksaw
5. File tool
6. Transparent tape

Note: Class 4 to 6 used cardboard sheet for making of ruler and 7 and 8 class can use hardboard sheet (MDF sheet)

### Hands-on Project # 2

A set square or triangle is an object used in engineering and technical drawing, with the aim of providing a straightedge at a right angle or other particular planar angle to a baseline. The simplest form of set square is a triangular piece of transparent plastic with the centre removed

Materials Required:

1. 3mm hardboard sheet
2. Black marker
3. 1 feet ruler
4. Hacksaw
5. File tool
6. Set square
7. Transparent tape

Note: Class 4 to 6 used cardboard sheet for making of ruler and 7 and 8 class can use hardboard sheet (MDF sheet). knife cutter is not recommended

### Hands-on Project #3

A try square is a woodworking or a metalworking tool used for marking and measuring a piece of wood. The square refers to the tool's primary use of measuring the accuracy of a right angle; to try a surface is to check its straightness or correspondence to an adjoining surface

Materials Required:

1. 3mm hardboard sheet
2. Black marker
3. 1 feet ruler
4. Hacksaw
5. File tool
6. Try square
7. Transparent tape
8. Elfy

Note: Class 4 to 6 used cardboard sheet for making of ruler and 7 and 8 class can use hardboard sheet (MDF sheet).

### Hands-on Project # 4 Circle centre finder

A simple and effective tool. Place on round shape to quickly find the center.

Make your own Circle centre finder

Materials Required:

1. 3 mm hardboard sheet
2. Black marker
5. Hacksaw
6. File tool

Note: Class 4 to 6 used cardboard sheet for making of ruler and 7 and 8 class can use hardboard sheet (MDF sheet).

### Hands-on Project # 5

A protractor is a measuring instrument, typically made of transparent plastic or glass, for measuring angles. Most protractors measure angles in degrees. Radian-scale protractors measure angles in radians. Most protractors are divided into 180 equal parts

Materials Required:

1. 3mm hardboard sheet
2. Black marker
3. 1 feet ruler
4. Hacksaw
5. File tool
6. Protractor

### Hands-on Project # 6 Drafting Compasses (optional)

A pair of compasses, also known as a compass, is a technical drawing instrument that can be used for inscribing circles or arcs. As dividers, they can also be used as tools to measure distances, in particular on maps. Compasses can be used for mathematics, drafting, navigation and other purposes

### Hands-on Project # 7 VERNIER CALIPERS (optional)

A vernier scale is a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical interpolation; thereby increasing resolution and reducing measurement uncertainty by using Vernier acuity to reduce human estimation error
