PORTABLE DEVICE FOR HEAT STROKE PREVENTION
BACKGROUND: With the rise in global temperature every passing year, more and more cases of Heat Strokes are being observed. Heat strokes in the summer can happen without notice. The body temperature increases and one may not be paying attention. It can occur by working outdoors, too much bodily strain in heat or just being still in very hot weather. Last year, heat strokes caused deaths of about 2,000 people in Pakistan and about 2,500 in India. Heat waves have caused about 22,562 deaths in India since 1992, with numbers increasing in recent years.
THEORY: Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature of a person exceeds 105.1 F. Therefore, maintaining the body temperature under 105.1 F may be considered as preventing a heat stroke. For lowering the body temperature, an effective technique is to cool down the blood flowing through the veins under our skin. On the side of our neck are a large number of blood veins which are also very close to the skin. By keeping a cold thing on this area for several minutes we may be able to cool the blood which will in turn lower the body temperature and thus, prevent a heat stroke.
SOLUTION: Heat strokes occur outdoors so the thing to be used for cooling must be easily portable, lightweight and should become really cold when we want to use the device. Things which are cold by nature such as ice cannot be used because it easily melts in hot weather and is also heavy. Therefore, an effective solution is to use Acetic Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate because when these two react with each other the temperature of the solution goes down significantly and they are also really lightweight besides only a small quantity of each chemical will be required. If these two are kept in different compartments in the device and mixed when we want to use the device the solution will cool down very quickly and hence, may achieve the desired results.
STRUCTURE: The important feature of the structure of this device must be that it should be made by a lightweight material to increase its portability and all its sides except the one which will be kept on the neck of the person must be insulators thus, helping in maintaining the low temperature attained by the reaction.
APPLICATION: Whenever a person is going out for any kind of work in hot weather especially in summer, he shall keep this device with him. The device will be designed in such a way that it could easily be kept in a pocket. If the person feels dizziness or if he feels too hot, then he will take the device out, press a button or something on the device which will mix the two chemicals and keep this device on his neck for a few minutes and he will start feeling normal again.
Reaction Type: Endothermic Reaction
Chemical Equation: NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → CO2 + H2O + Na+ + CH3COO-
I carried out this reaction two times in the laboratory and although, I aimed to bring down the final temperature to 0 C but both of the times I failed to achieve my goal.
REVIEW: I took a review of what I had done wrong and realized that the Acetic Acid I had used was too diluted (1 M ) and for the reaction to work properly the Acetic Acid must be concentrated. The quantities that I now propose to be used are as follows:
4M Acetic Acid solution : 50 ml
Sodium Bicarbonate : 16.8 g (or more)
In this way, many valuable lives can be saved because this is an effective and cheap method to prevent heat strokes. I am confident that the next time when I will get a chance to perform this experiment Insha Allah the results will be the ones required.
